Quick format recognition
The maybe most important feature of this tool is to allow the user to quickly get an overview on what format sub-classes/versions of files he is working with.
Everybody who has ever handled SMAF or PMD files will by now have understood the reason for the existence of this tool. For the interested non professional, the challenge should be explained first;
Many sample based ringtone formats have evolved since their first introduction.
One very wide-spread ringtone format and great example would be Yamaha's Synthetic Music Application Format a.k.a. SMAF.
It has, by today, done four big evolutionairy steps. The first generation was called MA1. SMAF MA1 usually manifested itself in two "flavors" (handyphone and mobile uncompressed).
As usual in this market, handsets ate only one of those flavors, depending on the handset-model and vendor / carrier.
The good thing was that later, starting with the next SMAF evolution called MA2, the handsets usually ate both flavors (additionally to the downward compatiblity).
Trouble now was that both evolutions traditionally use the same file-extension for this format; .MMF,
triggering a lot of confusion in the market and already on a producer's workstation.
That certainly did not change when MA3, MA5 and now MA7 were introduced. Without the Mobile Content Shell Extension, when browsing with your windows explorer,
it is impossible to tell which phone a file will work on.
|
The Mobile Content Shell Extension displays the format version within the icon shown by your normal windows explorer. Actually its not just the explorer, every windows application that shows file-icons using the standard methods will now show the new, more helpful icons.
|

Format subclasses / versions indicated by the file-icons provided
|
| |
For formats supporting protection mechanisms (e.g. SMAF), this icon will display a little lock for files that are save-protected.
It may at this occasion be noted that all file-type-icons were manually rendered at 16, 32, 48, 128 and 255 pixel in square (the latter two usable for Vista only).
|

Protection status indicted by the file-icons provided
|
| |
As this tool is a so called "standard shell extension", its not only the Explorer that now knows which icon to display.
Even Outlook now identifies those files by their content.

All meta data encoded into the file will be extracted and displayed on various occasions.

The sample data is extracted and displayed. You can even play the sample for control and quality assurance purposes.
Note:This tool will not play any sequence data, just samples. Only the longest playing sample that is contained in the ringtone file will be displayed / playable.
This is a current restriction for this tool applying to RMF-, MMF- and the CMX-format (mixed media formats).
